About the Division

The Division of Access, Opportunity, and Diversity (DAOD) provides leadership and resources to develop culturally competent leaders and continue supporting our welcoming and respectful campus environment as articulated in the University of Iowa's strategic plan. The DOAD helps to coordinate the central efforts supporting all campus units to remain compliance with federal/state laws and maintain accreditation standards. The DAOD offices also assist efforts to recruit and retain faculty, staff, and students. The office's primary goal is to enhance a welcoming, and respectful campus environment for all.

The work of the office is rooted in mastering three core elements:

  1. Creation of a culture where all people can be productive and contribute.
  2. Cultivation of communities that are open and welcoming to all.
  3. Working with people to find common ground.

The central office and the University of Iowa strives to accomplish the following:

  • Provide an education to students, supporting their aspirations in their careers and lives.
  • Develop and hone skills to manage differences.
  • Support students and their success by creating a community on which they can rely.
  • Meet the needs of Iowans through research, teaching, and public service.

The Division of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion consists of two units: The Office of Civil Rights Compliance (OCRC) and the Office of Access and Support (OAS).

A Message from Liz

"I am keenly aware that while the UI has made great strides in developing a welcoming and respectful environment for all Hawkeyes but, we are not without our challenges. I firmly believe the foundation and decisions we set forth can positively impact the UI now and for years to come. A key component of this is working with campus and community leaders on incorporating more transparency and accountability. I welcome the opportunity to listen to all members of the community whose voices have not always been heard, and enact change where possible."
